Iran Conflict — 2026-07-22 (NOON)
Current status
Washington says talks remain possible but accuses Tehran of not being serious. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US remains open to negotiations, while warning that Iranian control or toll collection in the Strait of Hormuz would set a “dangerous precedent.”
Oil prices jumped about 4% as ceasefire hopes faded. The market move followed Rubio’s assessment and the continuation of US attacks, showing the immediate price sensitivity of Gulf shipping and diplomacy.
US strikes and Iranian air-defence activity continue into the 11th consecutive night. Al Jazeera reports explosions over Tehran as air defences activated; CENTCOM said it had completed an 11th straight night of strikes.
Regional pressure for a deal is broadening. The New York Times reports growing impatience among Iran’s neighbours for an end to the war, while the UN called for restraint, dialogue and an end to attacks on vital regional infrastructure.
Kuwait is rationing electricity after Iranian strikes hit power infrastructure. The disruption is a direct warning for Gulf states about the vulnerability of civilian utilities as the conflict persists.
UAE / Gulf angle
Rubio’s Hormuz warning and the 4% oil-price jump reinforce the UAE’s two-track exposure: higher hydrocarbon prices can support export revenue, but disrupted shipping raises insurance, logistics and wider economic costs. The Habshan–Fujairah bypass remains strategically important.
Kuwait’s electricity rationing shows that Gulf civilian infrastructure remains exposed even without a newly reported strike on the UAE. Defensive readiness around power, water, ports and airports remains central.
The US and Iran are still publicly leaving a diplomatic door open, but Washington’s “not serious” assessment means the near-term baseline remains continued strikes, market volatility and elevated retaliation risk.
What changed since the previous update
The main new diplomatic signal is negative: the US says it is open to talks but does not currently regard Tehran as serious.
Oil prices have reacted sharply, rising about 4% as hopes for a near-term ceasefire weakened.
Rubio has explicitly elevated any Iranian toll regime or control over Hormuz as a dangerous precedent, sharpening the shipping-risk dimension.
Kuwait has moved to electricity rationing after Iranian attacks on power infrastructure, making the Gulf civilian-infrastructure impact more concrete.
